چکیده

The concentrations of Cs and potassium in the surface layers of arable soils were analyzed in the selected region of Eastern Poland approximately 20 years after the Chernobyl power plant accident. Additionally, the occurrence of the elements in soil in the forms available for plants was determined. In relation to the total concentrations of Cs and K in the soil, cesium is found in larger quantities in the forms available for plants than potassium. Radiation doses through ingestion were estimated on the basis of Cs and K measurements in food samples. It was proved that during the period 1998-2007 the annual average intake of radiocesium per person exceeded twofold the national average, whereas the intake of potassium satisfied the body’s daily demand for this element.

Detection of ionizing radiation emitted from the cesium-137 and cobalt-60 sources using electrochemical superoxide anion sensor in the aqueous medium

Widespread use of ionizing radiation in medicine, industry, agriculture, education and research, the increasing production of nuclear waste and nuclear incidents, has exposed humans and organisms to this radiation. Despite the benefits of ionizing radiation, these beams can cause serious damage to living systems. Hence, the need for radiation protection actions requires accurate, fast, inexpens...

Can Infrared Spectroscopy Be Used to Measure Change in Potassium Nitrate Concentration as a Proxy for Soil Particle Movement?

Displacement of soil particles caused by erosion influences soil condition and fertility. To date, the cesium 137 isotope ((137)Cs) technique is most commonly used for soil particle tracing. However when large areas are considered, the expensive soil sampling and analysis present an obstacle. Infrared spectral measurements would provide a solution, however the small concentrations of the isotop...

Spatial Variability and Cesium-137 Inventories in Native Forest

With the nuclear fission discovery and development of nuclear weapons in 1940s, artificial radioisotopes were introduced in the environment. This contamination is due to worldwide fallout by superficial nuclear tests realized from early 1950s to late 1970s by USA, former URSS, UK, France and China. One of theses radioisotopes that have been very studied is cesium-137. Cesium-137 has a half-life...

Potassium reserves in soils with arid and semi-arid climate in southern Iran: a perspective based on potassium fixation

ABSTRACT- The present research was conducted to study K forms and fixation in soils of southern Iran (Hormozgan Province) with aridic and aridic-ustic regimes and to address the relations between soil mineralogy and potassium forms. Thirteen surface soil samples (0-25 cm) were collected from different regions and analyzed in laboratory. Illite and feldspar and mica are the major clay and soil m...

Pulsed redistribution of a contaminant following forest fire: cesium-137 in runoff.

Of the natural processes that concentrate dispersed environmental contaminants, landscape fire stands out as having potential to rapidly concentrate contaminants and accelerate their redistribution. This study used rainfall simulation methods to quantify changes in concentration of a widely dispersed environmental contaminant (global fallout 137Cs) in soils and surface water runoff following a ...
